Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to determine the correlations between the indices of carbohydrate metabolism and concentrations of apelin in blood plasma of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with different phenotype. Materials and methods. A total of 32 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus of different phenotype (13 males and 19 females, mean age 56,77±1,79 years) have been followed up. The control group included 20 healthy individuals. Results. Significantly elevated levels of the adipocytokine apelin were found, as well as significant correlations between body mass index, apelin and parameters of carbohydrate metabolism. Conclusions. Increased blood levels of apelin and correlations between this adipocytokine with anthropometric parameters and indices of carbohydrate metabolism suggest that elevated body weight activates and exacerbates the impact of adipose tissue hormones on metabolic status in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
