Intrathyroid iodine in patients with unilateral nodular colloid endemic goiter

Abstract

The authors analyze the results of testing intrathyroid iodine pool in 198 patients who were operated for a unilateral nodular colloidal goiter. In paranodular thyroid tissue and opposite contralateral thyroid tissue not affected by the nodule the content of total, organificated and inorganic iodine was studied. The results were assessed depending on goiter duration. It has been established a reduction in organic and total iodine and an increase in the level of inorganic form compared with the control. The changes in intrathyroid iodine pool indices directly correlated with disease duration. Their intensity is largely expressed in case of disease duration from 16 to 25 years. The number of nodules in thyroid lobe increased with a rise in inorganic iodine and with a reduction in organificated iodine content more than twice. Changes in intrathyroid iodine pool content were associated with a decreased ability of gland parenchyma to synthesize thyroid hormones.
